Ark Encounter and Creation Museum: 15 Best Visit Tips

Based on our travel experience, below are our tips for planning your trip to the Ark Encounter and Creation Museum.

1. Which Attraction to Visit First

We recommend visiting the Creation Museum first. The museum is in Petersburg, Northern Kentucky. It is approximately 45 minutes to an hour north of the Ark Encounter.

Originally, we did not have plans to visit the museum, but my dad said that this experience would give us a broader view of the connection between the museum and the Ark. And he was correct. We found that the Creation Museum laid the framework for understanding why the Ark was built both in the past and present.

The museum provides a platform for a comprehensive understanding of the biblical narrative of creation. Through engaging exhibits, immersive displays, and informative presentations, you gain insights into the biblical account of the origin of the universe, the creation of mankind, and the unfolding of history.

2. When to Visit the Creation Museum

The museum is open Monday through Saturday from 9am to 7pm. From the end of May until the beginning of September, the museum is open longer during the weekdays and is open on Sundays from 1pm to 7pm.

We arrived on Monday early afternoon. The museum was very busy, but we were able to comfortably walk through all the exhibits. Ideally it is better to visit on a weekday due to weekend crowds.

From the Welcome Center, the Museum is approximately a 5-to-10-minute walk along a path. Be prepared if there is inclement weather.

Where to Stay Near the Ark Encounter

When we were planning our trip, we wanted to find a hotel closer to the Ark Encounter than the Creation Museum. We visited the Creation Museum then drove to Dry Ridge which is about 10 minutes from Williamstown. Our plan was to spend a full day at the Ark, so we stayed overnight at the Hampton Inn in Dry Ridge.

This is in a good location just off of the I-75 and free breakfast is included! Several other options are available in Dry Ridge including Comfort Suites, Quality Inn, and Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham.

We also found out that there is a Hampton Inn & Suites directly next to the Ark Encounter. But we were happy with our choice in Dry Ridge because there are several restaurants close to the hotels.

Where to Eat Near the Ark Encounter

In Dry Ridge, Kentucky, there are several dining options including fast food. We had a very good dinner at LaRosa’s Pizza, and they have a bar. There is also a Cracker Barrel and a Waffle House – places that you know what to expect.

While in Williamstown, we saw El Jalisco Mexican Restaurant which is very close to the Ark Encounter.

What to Do Near the Ark Encounter

After we visited the Creation Museum, we had a few hours left in the day to explore. Since we were in moonshine territory, we decided to visit a bourbon distillery. About 35 minutes south of the Creation Museum is the Neeley Family Distillery in Sparta Kentucky. It is down the road from the Kentucky Speedway which is now in-active.

Ark Encounter and Creation Museum: 15 Best Visit Tips (By A Travel Expert) - Practical Travel Concepts (13)

This is a family-owned and operated distillery. The Neeley family is from Ireland and for 11 generations they have been distilling and bootlegging moonshine illegally until 2015. When we arrived, the tours had finished but we were able to do a Spirits Tasting which in our minds was a great way to end our sightseeing day.

Ark Encounter and Creation Museum: 15 Best Visit Tips (By A Travel Expert) - Practical Travel Concepts (14)

Now I have never participated in a spirits tasting, wine is more of my cup of tea. So, our hosts, Tom, and Wade, taught us how to properly prepare the palate for the tasting experience. We sampled 8 products including Authentic Kentucky Moonshine, Bourbon, Rye Whiskey, PawPaw’s Flavored Whiskies, Flavored Moonshine Cream’s, and Absinthe. For someone who does not generally drink liquor, we did walk away with a few bottles of our own!

Tours of the distillery are available Monday through Saturday at 11:30am, 1:30pm and 3:30pm. The tour and tasting last about an hour and a half. Reservations are not required unless you have a group of 10 or more. There is a fee for both the tour and tasting.
